To make a full size version of the tatami inspired queen size platform bed, the length and width of the frame need to be reduced by 5″ and 6″ respectively. Otherwise the construction and joinery is the same as the queen version. The materials list is the same as if you were building a queen version, but below is the cut list with the new measurements.
Materials List for Full Size
- 2×2 – 3 @ 8′
- 1×4 – 2 @ 8’
- 1×4 – 7 @ 6’
- 1×2 – 7 @ 8’
- 1×5 – 1 @ 6′
- 1×3 – 15 @ 6′
Cut List
- (1) 2×2 @ 75 1/2″
- (16) 2×2 @ 9 1/2″
- (8) 1×2 @ 6″
- (3) 1×2 @ 19 1/4″
- (4) 1×2 @ 72 1/2″
- (3) 1×2 @ 49 1/2″
- (2) 1×2 @ 1 1/2″
- (2) 1×2 @ 4″ trimmed to 1 1/4″ width.
- (2) 1×4 @ 80″
- (7) 1×4 @ 57″
- (2) 1×5 @ 7 1/4″ – Middle Support
- (2) 1×5 @ 8 3/4″ – Middle Support
- (4) 1×5 @ 6″ trimmed to 3 3/4″ width.

Hi Ed, I’m excited to build this bed for my grandson this spring. However, he just wants a Full bed size rather than a queen or king. What measurements do I use for a Full size when I purchase/download the PDF plans?
Thanks.
Hi Marc, thanks for the note. Here’s an image with measurements for a full version.
Thanks,
Ed
Hi there, thanks so much for this awesome guide! In the cut list you have (2) 1×5 @ 6″ trimmed to 3 3/4″ width, and those are for the middle part of each of the corner posts? So should that be 4 cuts instead of 2?
Yes, you’re correct. It should be 4 pieces of the 1×5, each 6″ x 3 3/4″. Thanks for catching that!
Thanks for this! I bought the queen plans and I was just planning on doing the math myself, but it’s nice to have something to double check my figures on. I see in the pdf you use Sketchup! That’s my go to as well. I’ll probably end up rendering it in Skethcup myself just to get my head around it, but have you considered having the sketchup files as an additional purchase/download?
Thanks Matt, that’s a great idea & easy to do.
Cheers,
Ed
Just purchased the plans for the queen bed. If I wanted to make the King instead do I need separate plans or can I just add measurements for a king?
Hi Ken, yes you can adjust the measurements. Also, I’m happy to send you a king plan.
I am quite a novice at this but it does seem doable.
Are those measurements for the mattress to fit inside the frame?
I was going to attach 2x2s to the inside of the frame so the cross slats would be recessed and part of the mattress could fit into that recess.
Hi Sue, thanks for the note. Yes, this is a good plan for a more novice woodworker. The biggest challenge of it is the joint for the bed rails, but it can be done with a circular saw and some patience. The plan is designed for the mattress to fit inside the frame, but I always suggest measuring your mattress and adjusting as needed, since even though there are standard mattress sizes, different manufacturers have slight variations.
Thanks,
Ed
