Using Photoshop to Figure Out Values

As I’ve been developing my drawing and painting skills, it doesn’t matter whether I’m taking a class or watching online tutorials, I’m constantly reminded of the importance of value.  If you’re reading this post, you’ve probably heard a hundred times that values are more important than shapes and proportions (even though they are important too!).  But values are the foundation of a drawing or painting.

Storm Picture

So I’m taking a break in the middle of my storm picture.  It’s really quite horrid at this point in it’s life, kind of like a troubled adolescent that’s rebelling against everything I want it to be.  And as I’m reflecting on why, exactly, it’s giving me so much grief I think the analogy is a good one – like the angry kid, it’s simply reflecting all of my mistakes in bringing it to this point.
